A review of the rules of 20/20 cricket

March 7th 2008 10:52

Before we get into profiling the teams in the new Indian Premier League I thought it might be worth doing a quick recap on the rules of 20/20 cricket.

(Actually for me this is a bit of a fact finding mission)

Well it appears that most of the rules of one day cricket are the same except for

- each innings consists of a 20 overs (duh!)
- each innings must take no longer than 75 minutes otherwise penalties apply to the team suspected of time wasting (umpires discretion)
- A bowler can bowl a maximum of 4 overs.

- Fielding restrictions exist, for the first 6 overs you can only have two fielders outside the 30 yard circle. After that you can have up to five fielders outside the circle
- front foot no balls result in the batting team getting a free hit from the next delivery where the batsman can only be dismissed by run out.
- if the scores are tied or there is no result the game can be decided by bowl-out (similar to the penalty shoot out in Soccer/Football) where five bowlers for each team bowl 1 delivery at an unguarded set of wickets.

It sounds a bit bash and crash to me - a game manufactured for television I suppose you could play two or even three in a day/night which would give value to money for spectators. The idea of the game is entertainment and skewed very much in the batsmen's favour. So automatically your big hitting entertainers will be the stars so Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Sanath Jayasuriya, MS Dhoni will be in demand - actually anyone who can clear the fence. As far as I can see you would best go in with a team stacked with batsman who can hit boundaries. I feel bowlers play a secondary role in this truncated form of the game and tactics and stragedy are out the door - though it should be said that wickets will generally always slow the scoring rate. Quality fielding will be essential as will a wicket keeper who is reliable (some things in cricket always remain no matter how much you shorten the game)

So that's a brief outline of the game rules. With that out of the way we can get down to business in future posts and start looking at the franchises and the teams they have purchased/assembled.

Should be fun so stay tuned.

Anyone who has played cricket loves hitting lot of runs in a short time and I bet they would love watching others hitting runs on TV as well. I would say twenty20 is good entertainment.

The Hyderabad based IPL team has good some big hitters. I became interested in the team after they got a good team and even started a forum at
Deccan Chargers Fans

With messers Symonds, Gilchrist, Afridi and Gibbs they are looking like the front runners

I'll be doing a full analysis of each team in coming weeks Vish so keep this blog bookmarked (and tell your friends)

20/20 will be nothing but good for the game of cricket. I'm looking forward to checking out the IPL as well. Hopefully it will turn into a global league.

Hey Harry,

Look I think 20/20 will turn into its own entity, maybe even go global but I think it isn't great for the skills that we know and love as part of test and one day cricket - If you have to be looking for lots of runs every ball then I think the idea of defensive shots are going to go out the window and the art of bowling will also go through some major changes. Shane Warne is one of the great cricketers of all time as is Sachin Tendulkar - suddenly an Andrew Symonds or jacob Oram become superstars not because of their skill but the ability to bludgeon a ball.

Having said that I am happy with the IPL and am looking forward to not just following it but blogging about it!!!

Thanks for dropping by and if you have a minute check out some of my other blogs

Thanks for the review of the rules there.

This dumbing down of the game is not something I am enjoying. Nevertheless while this version of the game is entertaining, I hope the youngsters dont get too much into this version for their own sake. Good cricket basics are not promoted through this version.

The bowlers are basically there to make up numbers and the game is heavily skewed in favour of the batsmen. And spinners will have a nightmare with this version. It would be very interesting to see Shane Warne bowl in this form of the game.
