March 9th 2008 11:29
In the previous blog I gave a quick recap of the concept and rules of 20/20 cricket. Today I want to at the new Indian Premier League competition and more specifically the new teams and franchises that have been create for it. It should be noted that there are many established sporting competitions in the world and starting one from scratch like this is extremely difficult - of course the massive sums of money and the television rights for more than a billion people make it a worthwhile risk.
The new Indian Premier League is made up of 8 teams each based in a different indian city - the franchises were auctioned on the 24th of January and the total paid for the 8 franchises was a staggering US$723.59million so here they are
1. Mumbai Indians - Coming out of the city once known as Bombay now Mumbai, this franchise is owned by Mukesh Ambani (India's second richest man) and Reliance Industries Limited. It's an interesting choice of names, the Indians - given that ALL 8 teams are based in India and the competition is called the INDIAN premier league. The franchise cost US$111.9 million.
2. Bangalore Royal Challengers - Coming from the IT capital of world Bangalore the Royal Challengers the franchise is owned by Dr. Vijay Mallya and the UB group. Dr Maliya already owns two football clubs in India as well as formula one racing team Force India. Used to spending money for sporting teams he paid US$111.6 million
3. Hyderabad - From the city of Hyderabad this franchise cost US$107 million. It is owned by The Deccan Chronicle - an English language newspaper published in Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. The newspaper takes its name from its place of origination, the Deccan region of India (of which Hyderabad is the major city)
4. Chennai SuperKings - From Chennai the city formerly known as Madras the Chennai SuperKings cost India Cements and N Srinivasan US$91 million.
5. Delhi DareDevils - This team represents the capital New Delhi and was bought for US$ 84 million. The owner are the GMR holdings group.
6. Mohali - based in Mohali this franchise cost US$76 million. The owners are Ness Wadia , Karan Paul (Apeejay Surendera Group), Mohit Burman (Dabur) and Bollywood starlet Preity Zinta star of the hit film Kal Ho Naa Ho.
7. Kolkota - Kolkota is what used to be called Calcutta. It is owned by several superstars of the Bollywood film scene - Shah Rukh Khan,Juhi Chawla Mehta and Jai Mehta. The franchise cost the trio of stars US$75.09 million
8. Jaipur Rajasthan Royals - the third team with a regal sounding name comes from Jaipur. Coming in at US$ 67 million Jaipur is the cheapest franchise and was bought by Emerging Media - one of the directors is Lachlan Murdoch (formerly on Newscorp)
Well that's the 8 teams and who owns them.
Now it's time for the good stuff as we will start to take a look at each team in detail - the players they bought at the player auction and what can be expected from them.
Stay tuned
