Harbhajan gets whats coming to him
April 30th 2008 04:59
We all had our suspicions about him during the last tour of Australia - It just seemed a little too weird that one player would constantly be at the centre of the storm but Harbhajan Singh was a constant through the controversial Australian summer.
Now we know that his reach of abuse goes beyond that of international players (the South African coach Micky Arthur claimed that they had trouble with both Harbhajan and Sreesanth and that Ashwell Prince - one of the teams black players was very upset with Harbhajan and forced an apology from him). The fact that Harbhajan Singh has hit a fellow Indian and team mate shows everyone the sort of character he is. I want to make two points about Harbhajan.
First - his disciplinary record is truly terrible and he needs to be punished from not just the IPL but the BCCI (pity the ICC didn't whack him with a substantial fine in Australia.
Secondly - he is a hugely overrated cricketer. I cannot believe that Mumbai forked out $850,000 for this dud! Thankfully they won't have to pay him now but could it be that he has some kind of hero status for apparently standing up to the Australians and this has clouded everyone's view they he really isn't that great a bowler (India would be well advised to develop the talents of young Piyush Chawla - his leg spin looks really promising)
That Harbhajan hit Sreesanth is particularly ironic given that Sreesanth too is a hot head who happily courts controversy and looks to continue the contest off the field.
All I can say is that I hope Harbhajan gets a second round of punishment - but as it stands his idiotic behaviour has cost him $800,000 - and if he can't see how stupid that is he shouldn't be playing cricket
