GAME 9 - Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals
April 27th 2008 07:51
HYDERABAD 5/214 (Symonds 117no R.Sharma 36 - Yusef Pathan 2/20 Warne 2/47)
JAIPUR 7/217 (Smith 71 Yusef Pathan 61 Warne 22no - Afridi 3/28 Vaas 1/42)
RAJASTHAN ROYALS won by 3 wickets with 1 ball to spare.
Well the game's sleeping giant awoke - Andrew Symonds finally came to the IPL party with one of those brutal belligerent innings we know and love him for. His 117 came off 53 balls with 11 fours and 7 sixes. Everybody played second fiddle to him with Rohit Sharma giving the best most intelligent support. All the bowlers were punished with Yusef Pathan and Shane Warne each getting two wickets apiece - but their games weren't finished nor were the Rajasthan Royals.
In the face of the imposing 214 set by the team from Hyderabad the Rajasthan Royals came out swinging and decided to make a real contest of the game. Terrific innings at the top of the order - 71 from South African captain Graeme Smith and a blistering 61 from just 28 balls set them up to be within striking distance. The Deccan Chargers made their job increasingly difficult taking wickets at crucial times.
Cometh the hour cometh the man - the captain and inspirational leader Shane Warne strode to the wicket needing an unlikely 20 runs from the last over. Symonds who was the undisputed hero with the bat now turned villian with the ball as Shane Warne belted his last over - the last over of the match into a victory for his Rajasthan Royals. Warne was chaired off the ground.
The cheapest of the franchises is looking better and better as Rajasthan goes from strength to strength while the most expensive team in the competition looks like they might be languishing.
